So I'm going / No to jadę

So I am going…

The route chosen: Portsmouth - Caen – Evreux - Paris - London – Portsmouth. Departure: Monday 14th July. 

On Monday 14th July I will catch the 22:45 ferry from Portsmouth to France, arriving at 06:45 on Tuesday morning in the port of Caen and here my challenge begins. From there it is hopefully two days on the bike to reach Paris with a planned overnight stay in Evreux, about half way along the route. All being well I hope to catch sight off Paris’ iconic La Tour Eiffel by the Wednesday evening. Thursday I have scheduled as a 'spare day', just in case the wind is blowing the wrong way and my journey is not quite as quick as I'd hoped! I really can't afford to miss my early morning train from Paris back to London, as it wouldn't be cheap buying a Eurostar ticket in high season on the day of departure! But if everything goes well, I'll  have Thursday to enjoy cycling around Paris and also meet my school friend Gosia. Whatever happens, on Friday at 07:13 I will be at Paris Gare du Nord boarding my train to London, St-Pancras, where I'll jump back on my bike again and set off on the last stage of the trip finding my way back home to Portsmouth.

The entire route is about 250 miles or 400 km. Caen to Evreux is 90 miles, Evreux to Paris 75 miles, London to Portsmouth 90 miles.

Where did the idea come from?

The idea of ​​the trip appeared in my head about three years ago. Inspired by people who take up a challenge, I thought I would love to take on one myself. So I looked at the various organisations that arrange charity adventures, wondering what could be mine and what purpose it could serve. Cycling from London to Paris sounded great to me. However, I wondered; “Why do I have to pay for organizing the trip if I can organize it all by myself”? This would be an even bigger challenge and bring more benefit and satisfaction. However, my idea had to wait because at that time my knees did not have enough strength for such an effort and so the idea lay in my head until this year to shine again in January.  In excitement of New Year's plans and resolutions I thought "If not now then when? My knees have got better and I need a challenge for myself".

So I decided! I was going! But for what purpose? Who would I like to help? When the idea first occurred to me I had few institutions in mind, but none of them seemed to be as close to my heart as our Polish School and its kids. So the target became clear and the whole thing started to have even more sense and meaning to me.

Why the Polish School?

I have worked for the school for 6 years now, teaching Polish language, traditions and culture. Although the classes are conducted only on Saturdays, the school has become a very important part of me. I love our Polish kids and I would love them to have the best conditions for learning and development of their Polish identity.

In previous years, we received financial assistance via the Community Languages Service, which was helping schools from minority ethnic communities in Hampshire. However, due to budget cuts the funds have stopped and at the moment the school runs exclusively from fees paid by parents.

With fewer funds, the beginning of this school year was a bit stressful. We weren’t sure if we could cover all the costs associated with running the school. However, due to the fact that we have taken the maximum number of children possible and received a one-time allowance from the Polish Embassy, ​​we managed to survive the year successfully. However, the needs are still great

These are the basic expenses:

Classroom fees, teacher’s salaries, educational materials, printing and photocopying costs.

We also need money to organise major school events and take part in competitions.

From September we’d like to have another teacher, allowing us to arrange the classes better, take on more children and deliver lessons more effectively.

All this is needed to provide our children a solid understanding of the Polish culture, instil a love for it, a joy and pride of being Polish and give them connection with their Homeland.

A więc jadę. 

Trasa obrana: Portsmouth-Caen-Evreux-Paryż-Londyn-Portsmouth. 
Czas wyznaczony:  Poniedziałek 14 lipca. 

Tego wieczoru o godz. 22:45 wypływam promem z Portsmouth do Francji.We wtorek o 6:45 rano dopływam do portu w Caen by od tego miejsca stawić czoła mojemu wyzwaniu. Dwa dni by dotrzeć do Paryża z planowanym noclegiem w Evreux, mniej więcej w połowie trasy. Iconę Paryża La Tour Eiffle mam nadzieję ujrzeć w środę wieczorem. W czwartek robię jednodniowy przystanek. Chcę mieć pewność, że zdążę na poranny pociąg do Londynu, w razie gdyby (odpukać) coś miało pójść niezgodnie z planem. Nie mogę ryzykować zakupu biletu w kasie w dniu odjazdy gdyż mój chrytatywny rajd mógłby się nagle stać bardzo drogą wycieczką (wszelkie koszty podróż pokrywam z własnej kieszeni a wszystkie donacje przeznaczone są na potrzeby szkoły). Dlatego też czwartek cieszę się Paryżem i spotkaniem z moją koleżanką ze szkolnych lat Gosią.  Jednak już w Piątek o godzinie 7 minut 13 rano wsiadam do pociągu relacji Paryż-Londyn by po dotarciu na miejsce znów wskoczyć na mój rower i wyruszyć w ostatni etap rajdu Londyn – Portsmouth.

Skąd taki pomysł?

Pomysł samego rajdu zrodził się w mojej głowie jakieś trzy lata temu. Zainspirowana osobami, które podejmują takie wyzwania pomyślałam, że też bym bardzo chciała jakieś podjąć. Zajrzałam więc na różne stronki, które organizują tego typu wyprawy-wyzwania i zastanawiałam się co ja bym chciała zrobić i jakiemu celowi mój wysiłek poświęcić. Rowerem z Londynu do Paryża w 3 dni brzmiało świetnie. Jednak zastanawiałam się dlaczego mam płacić komuś za zorganizowanie takiego rajdu, który przecież mogę zorganizować sama, co będzie jeszcze wiekszym wyzwaniem i przyniesie więcej korzyści i satysfakcji. Mój pomysł jednak musiał poczekać, ponieważ choć moża ja tak, ale moje kolana nie miały siły na taki wysiłek i dawały tego znaki. Więc pomysł przeleżał w mojej głowie by styczniu tego roku w ferworze noworocznych planów i postanowień zabłysnąć na nowo. „Jak nie teraz to kiedy?!” – pomyślałam – „Kolana mają sie lepiej a ja potrzebuję wyzwania dla siebie.” A więc postanowione! Jadę! Ale jaki cel? Co chcę wspomóc?  Gdy idea rajdu pierwszy raz zaświtała w mojej głowie, miałam kilka instytucji na myśli, jednak teraz żadna z nich nie wydawała się tak bliska memu sercu jak los naszej Polskiej Szkoły i naszych dzieciaków. Wiec gdy cel stał się jasny cała sprawa nabrała dla mnie jeszcze wiekszego sensu i znaczenia.

Dlaczego Polska Szkoła?

Ze szkołą jestem związana od 6 lat. Uczę mowy ojczystej i wychowania dzieci i młodzieży w tradycji i kulturze polskiej. Pomimo, że zajęcia prowadzone są tylko w soboty, szkoła stała się bardzo ważną częścią mnie. Kocham nasze polskie dzieciaki i chciałabym by miały jak najlepsze warunki do nauki i rozwoju polskiej tożsamości.

Na obecną chwilę szkoła utrzymuje się wyłacznie z opłat rodziców. W poprzednich latach otrzymywaliśmy organizacji wspomagąjacej sobotnie szkoły mniejszości narodowych w Hampshire. Jednak ze wzgledu na cięcia budżetowe urzędu miasta Portsmouth, fundusze te zostały nam odebrane. Dlatego też początek tego roku był nieco stresujący ponieważ nie byliśmy pewni czy uda nam się pokryć wszystkie koszty związane z prowadzeniem szkoły. Jednak dzięki temu, że przyjeliśmy maksymalną (na obecne warunki lokalowe) ilość dzieci i to, że otrzymaliśmy jednorazową zapomogę z Polskiej Ambasady, ostatecznie udało nam się przetrwać rok pomyślnie. Jednak potrzeby wciąż są duże. Te podstawowe: (opłata za lokal, wypłaty dla nauczycieli, podstawowe materiały szkolne (jak chociażby drukowanie i kserowanie) oraz te wyższe, rozwojowe: potrzeba tworzenia nowych klas, zakup pomocy dydaktycznych, możliwość organizacji większych uroczystości szkolnych lub brania udziału w konkurach. Wszystko po to by dać naszym dzieciakom solidną wiedzę o polskiej historii, tradycjach i kulturze , ale przede wszystkim dać zrozumienie czym jest Ojczyzna, zaszczepić miłość do niej oraz radość i dumę bycia Polakiem.
